Achieve true beauty, go cruelty-free

This is hands-down one of my favorite POC articles. Many consumers just think of going green and saving the environment, but I say think of our little furry friends, too. I encourage you to watch PETA's short video on animal testing, it will really open your eyes to the plight of animals who suffer in the name of beauty.

Every year, millions of animals are tested on by various manufacturers and suppliers. Toxic chemicals are injected into caged dogs, smeared to the eyes of restrained rabbits leading to blindness, massive amounts of substances are forcefully inhaled by monkeys and rats are made to develop tumors and experience seizures.

Arguably, some companies say that if not for these tests we never would have discovered antidotes, vaccines, medicines and cures that are readily available today. However according to PETA, it is a misconception as even prescription drugs that have been rigorously tested on animals, still pose a huge risk to humans. Furthermore, animals have different genetic makeup from us humans, and being kept caged, severely stressed and tested on can greatly vary the results of the experiment, hence making animal testing “unreliable” and “unscientific.”

Alternatives to animal testing

Currently, there are several other viable options to animal testing which are less expensive and provide more valid results. Some examples are in-vitro tests (cell cultures) and human volunteers. Researchers are also conducting more in-depth studies in order to determine the root causes of diseases and certain illnesses, therefore properly identifying possible cures/solutions.

How does it affect consumers?

A typical woman uses an average of 13 products – from facial washes, shampoos, conditioners, lotions to cosmetics - which results to an estimated 126 chemicals per day. One can only imagine how many animals have suffered because of our need to beautify ourselves. As many consumers now start to become aware, a lot of brands are now deciding to be environment-friendly and cruelty-free.

Here is a short list of brands that have pledged to avoid testing on animals:

ELF has been known in the US primarily for their $1.00 cosmetics and for providing quality products encased in packaging that doesn’t look cheap. ELF is quite possibly the most affordable of all makeup/cosmetic brands that strongly support PETA campaigns. ELF also boasts of being vegan, as quoted from their website: “We do NOT test on animals or endorse such practices. Our products do not contain animal derived ingredients. Beeswax has been replaced by synthetic beeswax and lanolin has been replaced by Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladinpale-2. We currently support HSUS and are partners with PETA in the Caring Consumer Project.”
