From Curly to Wavy: My Digiperm Hair Story

When I bit the bullet last year and had my hair digipermed, I was so happy with the results that I don't want to go back to having straight hair EVER again. Here's a quick recap, see how my perm has unravelled over the course of 11 months:

my peg in December 2011: Maggie Gyllenhaal curls
Since this was my first perm ever, I was still learning the ropes on how to properly style it. I used mousse at first which left my hair crunchy (I didn't know any better then, haha). After 10 days the curls started to slowly unravel -- goodbye Goldilocks curls and hello wavy, sexy hair:

Neutrogena BB Cream launch (June 2012)
This has got to be my favorite look ever -- love the hair length, the cascading waves, my floral dress and my overall aura. I guess at this time I was still enjoying work so much (POC days) and wasn't too tired to attend blogger events. And I was also more than happy to be one of Neutrogena's Brandvocates :)

At my new job (February 2012)
By March, my hair was long already and I've been using the TIGI Bed Head Foxy Curls Contour Cream. Foxy Curls gave me the definition and hold I needed and it helped my curls last the whole day. The photo below was taken during my Dad's birthday celebration:

Singapore (August 2012)
5 months later: Wow, my hair is really long! It takes a while for it to dry and sometimes if I get lazy to fix it (or the weather's screwed up), my hair wouldn't be as curly as I wanted it to be. But I still like it though. By this time I was already contemplating on getting another perm, but decided to wait it out til the Holidays.

Juro Salon Exclusif (September 2012)
I had the controversial hair cut from Jude Hipolito of JuRo Salon Exclusif. He got rid of frizz and a bit of length and extended the life of my perm. But it is getting rather too long for comfort, don't you think? They also gave me an ombre haircolor which I totally love, I shall definitely go back for a retouch next year!

Madame Tussaud's, Hong Kong (October 2012)
You'd see from the photos above that my perm could last more than a year if I wanted to. There were still lovely sporadic curls of about 5 inches long, they never really went away. I could even tie my hair up in a ponytail and the curls would rest on my shoulders, framing my face.

One thing I'm really proud of was that I was really diligent with conditioning and applying masques every week (since a digiperm will really dry out your hair), and I also took the time to properly style it in the morning. But it was getting really long and bothersome that hey, I decided to undergo another perm last Friday. Of course, I chose Beauty Brick once again and the staff plus Mr. Shin were more than happy to see me again after almost a year.

I'll write about my second Beauty Brick experience in my future posts, so stay tuned! :)

  3. Love your waves. I just had digi last September but how come mine looks like cold wave? I put styling mousse pero my hair gets too curly. I like your hair kc it looks natural. Do you put anything on your hair (like setting lotion etc). How come it looks like natural wave... ganda!

    1. Why thank you, Katie!

I don't use styling mousse cos it gives me crunchy ends. I use Curls Up

      (see http://www.kira-ramirez.com/2012/10/silka-seaview-hotel-hongkong.html)

for defrizzing then Foxy Curls. I think Mr. Shin used large rollers last year, last Friday he used medium rollers and my hair's so curly! Haha! But the curls will usually tame down in a month or two :)

  4. Beautiful wavy hair, Kira! I love it! I'm actually growing my hair now (since I'm quite impatient and keep cutting my hair out of impulse) for a change and have convinced myself on having wavy to curly hairs :)

    1. Hi Joyce! So glad you love Beauty Brick, too! It's so sulit to have it done there, the curls last forever :)

Now's the best time to pay them a visit as the salon isn't so crowded yet! Goodluck on your second perm :)

  6. Good thing I came across your blog Kira. So many good reads! :)

I'm also donning curly hair for almost 3 years now. And also courtesy of Mr. Shin. the curls really lasts a long time. mine's almost a year now, but still curly that I still get lots of compliment from friends and colleagues. Another good thing with Beauty Brick is that you get a discount on your 2nd and succeeding salon services. :)

BTW, have you tried their hair wax (hard)? it's a good one, though a bit pricey at P500.

Stay sexy and pretty curly Kira! :)

Thanks again for reading my blog, I really appreciate it :)

    1. Hi Rizafel! You can go to Beauty Brick and have your hair checked first. Based on experience, the perm is better on virgin hair but they can also do it on previously treated hair. You'll only know once you have your hair checked by Mr. Shin.

I would suggest medium curls so they last longer :)
