Messy Bessy is probably one of the most underrated local brands in the all-natural/organic scene. They’ve been around almost forever (do you remember Leyende back in the day? I used to support them alongside Messy Bessy), are so affordable, and are made of simple ingredients spearheaded by pure ol’ water.
I’ve long been a supporter of Messy Bessy especially the minty Disinfectant Aroma Spray which can also be used as a deodorizer spray (for sanitizing public toilets, office tables, and other surfaces), hand sanitizer, yoga mat cleaner, and poo-fume. I just buy the 500ml spray bottle and refill my 50ml one to save big bucks and lessen plastic consumption (you can join me rid oceans of plastic, check my Eco Bricks challenge here)
A new discovery is their Bug Repellent Cologne from their baby line which I supposedly got for my nephew but ended up using while traveling. This was part of a special bundle pack released last Christmas, a pack of 3 was only Php 150.
No-nonsense ingredients list
What I love about Messy Bessy is they always use as few ingredients as possible. In this case, their bug repellent has a mixture of 5 ingredients total and the formula is mostly made of water mixed with sugarcane alcohol. The result is a non-sticky and fragrant bug spray that can be used by both toddlers and adults.
How to use
Spray generously on palms and spread on exposed skin, or spray directly on skin and rub. For babies, spray on clothes. I am currently in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte and I have been using this for the past 4 days. It does help ward off a couple of mosquitoes but it’s not strong enough (compared to an oil-based citronella bug spray) to actually prevent the big ones from biting me — and we all know that provincial mosquitoes are nasty compared to city bugs! I’d say, reapplication is important in order to protect yourself.
The good thing is, it smells pleasant and the non-sticky formula makes it easy to reapply several times throughout the day. It doesn’t feel tacky or annoying on the skin. I’d recommend the Messy Bessy Bug Repellent Cologne for city or home use but not for hiking or for outdoor activities, you’d need a stronger product for that!
